Family Guy Season 17 Premiere: "Married... With Cancer" Review
Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
When a show has been on the air as long as Family Guy, any attempt to shake up the usual formula is generally a risk worth taking. South Park has changed things up by pursing a more continuity-driven approach in recent years. Family Guy has never been that ambitious, but occasionally fans are treated to a multi-episode storyline where the events of one episode actually carry over to the next. Kicking off Season 17 with another two-parter is a nice way to welcome the series back. That said, "Married... With Cancer" left me questioning why this storyline actually needs a second chapter in the end.
Brian is probably the most frustrating character on the series. In some ways, he's the most complex member of the Griffin family, with more emotional foibles and generally giving the writers more room in which to play around. But Brian also tends to be the most obnoxious of Family Guy's main cast. So much of the show's Brian-related humor centers around his performative wokeness and his desperation for other to recognize how progressive and open-minded he is.

Fear the Walking Dead: Season 4 Finale Review
Warning: Full spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead's Season 4 finale follow...
Fear the Walking Dead's Season 4 finale had one job, basically. Regardless of who lived or died, of who survived to see the adventures ahead (spoiler: it was freakin' everyone), none of these folks could ever step foot in Alexandria.
I know, I know. That's crazy, right? This whole half season's been solely about Morgan collecting his new compadres (even meeting some new ones) and taking them all to his friend Rick. To house them in a safe environment. To show them the king he's always talking about. The king who - er - used to have a tiger. It's been his directive from the get-go.
Now all of that had to unravel in 50 minutes. Or 80 minutes including commercials. Or really, the final five minutes because that's how quickly the show had Morgan ditch his entire plan. Because The Walking Dead's about to hit us with an eighteen month time jump. Yup, just as Fear caught up to Walking Dead, the original show's like "Smell ya later!" and is skipping ahead a year and a half.

The Simpsons Season 30 Premiere: "Bart's Not Dead" Review
Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
September 30 seems like an appropriate day for The Simpsons to kick off its 30th season. That's another huge milestone for the series in 2018, after it already broke Gunsmoke's record as the longest-running primetime scripted series in history. Not that the series went out of tis way to mark the occasion (aside from a quick nod during the intro). That's probably for the best. Last season kicked off with the gimmicky, medieval-themed "The Serfsons," an episode that failed to give the show much early momentum. "Bart's Not Dead" sticks to treading more traditional ground, and in the process becomes one of the series' better season premieres in recent memory.

As the youngest England player since the Second World War, he played 18 times for his country at top level. Joker Set Photo Suggests the DC Movie Inspired by This Film
While The King of Comedy is a widely reported inspiration for the Joker origin movie, new clues from the set hint that another Martin Scorsese/Robert De Niro classic -- Taxi Driver -- could also be an influence.
The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver are both profiles of deranged and broken men, delusional urban loners who criminally lash out at those they feel have rejected them, and the Joker movie -- penned by director Todd Phillips (the Hangover trilogy) and co-screenwriter Scott Silver (8 Mile, The Fighter) -- certainly sounds like it’s in a similar vein. The official plot synopsis for Joker describes Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck as “a man disregarded by society” and the DC film as “not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”

Why Aren't There More MCU Comics?
There's an unusual relationship between Marvel Comics and Marvel Studios. The comics are the original source material, and they've inspired every MCU film to some degree or another. At the same time, the MCU tends to make big, ambitious changes to that source material, a lot of which winds up inspiring similar changes in the comics. Sometimes comic creators find inspired ways of working these new elements into their books (Exiles introducing an MCU-inspired version of Valkyrie being one recent, notable example), and other times... we get Nick Fury, Jr. The constant back-and-forth relationship between the comics and the movies begs the question - why doesn't Marvel publish more comics that are actually set in the MCU? Why aren't they exploring that mostly untapped storytelling potential?

This September, IGN is featuring the best TV coming your way in the 2018-2019 season. Today we're spotlighting The Little Drummer Girl, an upcoming AMC limited series based on the 1983 spy thriller from novelist John le Carré - the second AMC adaptation of the author's work, following 2016's The Night Manager. The Little Drummer Girl stars Florence Pugh as Charlie, a British actress who falls in love with a man named Becker (Alexander Skarsgård), only to discover she's actually being recruited into a complex plot to hunt down a Palestinian terrorist. Little Drummer Girl is also notable for serving as the TV directorial debut for acclaimed Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook. We were able to talk with showrunners Simon and Stephen Cornwell about the new series, why it's as much a love story as a thriller, and why Park was so eager to participate in the show. Jean Bolikango (1909–1982) was a Congolese educator, writer, and conservative politician. He was Deputy Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (then Republic of the Congo), in September 1960 and from February to August 1962. Enjoying substantial popularity among the Bangala people, he headed the Parti de l'Unité Nationale and worked as a key opposition member in Parliament in the early 1960s. Beginning his career in the Belgian Congo as a teacher in Catholic schools, he wrote a novel and worked as a journalist before turning to politics in the late 1950s. Though he held a top communications post in the colonial administration, he became a leader in the push for independence. After the Republic of the Congo became independent in 1960, he promoted both a united Congo and strong ties with Belgium. The President of the Congo posthumously awarded Bolikango a medal in 2005 for his long career in public service.

Dave Bautista Is Returning to WWE for SmackDown 1000
On Tuesday, October 16, Evolution will be reuniting for WWE SmackDown’s 1,000th episode, which includes the return of Dave Bautista.

Dave Bautista (under his famous ring name Batista) became a six-time WWE world champion by winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship four times and the WWE Championship twice.

Minecraft: Dungeons Announced for PC
Minecraft: Dungeons, a brand new game set in the world of Minecraft, is coming to PC in 2019, Mojang announced today during Minecon Earth 2018.
Being developed internally by a "small and dedicated team" within Mojang, the developer describes Minecraft: Dungeons as an "action-adventure game inspired by classic dungeon crawlers." It'll support up to four players and feature various new weapons, items, and mobs, as well as a variety of environments to explore and an overarching quest that'll see players face off against an enemy called the Arch-Illager.
"When I think of Minecraft I think about it as a multiverse," Jens Bergensten, lead developer at Mojang told IGN. "Dungeons is essentially one Minecraft world with specific areas to go to, specific quests, and specific monsters. That said there are of course procedural elements to the game.”

Every Amiibo Figure Ever
Amiibo may not be the wild craze they were when they first released, but they are still some of the best official Nintendo figurines you can find. As of publish, 175 official Amiibo have been made or announced, though that number comes with some caveats.
Here's gallery of every single Amiibo figurine released or announced, sorted by game series. There are a whole lot in there, so be sure to use the arrow keys for quicker browsing if you are viewing on the desktop site:
Now, let's get a few things straight: We aren't counting the Animal Crossing Amiibo cards. There are A LOT of those, but 2D cards don't really feel like they qualify as full-on Amiibo. (Though we did include the cereal box Amiibo, that's 3D, right?) Additionally, there are four figurines from the Skylanders games, but they actually do double as official Amiibo. Additionally, the Mr. Game & Watch Amiibo has four interchangeable poses sold in a bundle with only one base, technically making it a single Amiibo.

Why the PS4 Spider-Man Deserves His Own Comic
Marvel Comics released Spider-Geddon #0 this week. While that comic serves as a direct lead-in to the upcoming Spider-Geddon crossover, that's by no means the only selling point. Spider-Geddon #0 is notable for serving as the comic book debut of the Peter Parker of Marvel's Spider-Man video game on PS4. And if this issue accomplished anything, it's showing how much potential this version of Spidey has for his own ongoing comic book series.
Warning: spoilers for Marvel's Spider-Man on PS4 ahead!
It's easy to dismiss the need for a Spider-Man comic set in this game's version of the Marvel universe. Marvel has an overabundance of Spider-Man comics as it is, with books spotlighting the classic Peter Parker as well as offshoot characters like Spider-Gwen, Scarlet Spider and Venom. There's even an alternate universe version of Spidey in Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows. Is Insomniac's take on Spider-Man truly different enough to stand out when you cut the gameplay out of the equation and focus solely on story?

John de Gray
John de Gray (died 1214) was a medieval English Bishop of Norwich. He was employed in the service of King John even before the coronation, for which de Gray was rewarded with various ecclesiastical offices, culminating in his pro forma election to Norwich in 1200. He continued in royal service after his elevation to the episcopate, lending John money and undertaking diplomatic missions on his behalf. In 1205 John attempted to further reward de Gray by making him Archbishop of Canterbury, but a disputed election process led to de Gray's selection being quashed by Pope Innocent III in 1206. Stephen Langton was consecrated as archbishop against John's wishes, triggering a long dispute with the papacy. The pope imposed various sanctions on England and John. In 1209 de Gray became governor of Ireland for John, and spent until 1213 attempting to impose royal government there on the Anglo-Norman barons and the native Irish. He travelled to Rome to secure a papal pardon after the final settlement of the dispute with John. After the pardon, de Gray was appointed Bishop of Durham, but he died on his way back to England.

The Old Man & the Gun Review
Just like Robert Redford's own eternally dazzling smile, David Lowery's The Old Man & the Gun is welcoming, approachable, relaxed, and affable. Although ostensibly structured as crime thriller – it is based on the life of real-life bank robber and multiple prison escapee Forrest Tucker – The Old Man & the Gun moves gently and calmly, eager to stay at the pace of a gentle stroll. It is a film that invites one to sit in its living room, offers a cup of tea, and proceeds to spin yarns of the good old days while you listen raptly to its deceptively inconsequential anecdotes.
Forrest Tucker, for the uninitiated, was one of the most prolific career criminals of the 20th century. He reportedly escaped from 18 prisons, and made 12 additional attempts. His approach to robbing banks was a friendly one: He would enter a bank, wait for just the right moment, then show a gun to a teller or a manager, demanding cash. He wouldn't threaten, badger, or cuss. He would converse, defer, ask nicely, and compliment. And he always left with a smile on his face. He was a bank robber by the very nature of his bemused politeness. It's been said that his victims would speak kindly of him after the fact.

Well what do you know: Nintendo had thought of Bowsette before the internet did, and the character was nearly in Super Mario Odyssey.

Or, at least we thought this idea of a Bowser and Princess Peach combination was entirely made up by fans, until today’s release of The Art of Super Mario Odyssey in Japan.

In the current early access iteration of Post Scriptum, that’s taken to new heights: the need for constant coordination with your team is not only necessary for success, but easily the most enjoyable aspect of this World War 2 military simulation. This formula of squad-based team cohesion on steroids would make for a worthwhile shooter were it not for the frustrating maps, overly simplistic game mode, and a few baffling design decisions that get in the way of experiencing what Post Scriptum does well.
Post Scriptum is an unforgiving game where some players are inherently more powerful than others, and a single whizzing bullet can unceremoniously end an otherwise uneventful five-minute trek through its WW2-era Netherlands maps. This may sound difficult for difficulty’s sake but this opaque environment is ultimately what drives people to work together: there’s safety in numbers. If you’re gunned down while alone you have absolutely no recourse, but with a section of soldiers (a group of anywhere from four to nine) at your back you can be avenged and revived. And while this incentive also exists in Battlefield 1, the sheer amount of waiting and running required to get back into the action of Post Scriptum makes sticking with your squad feel even more essential. As someone who loves team play, this element was immediately gratifying, but as time pressed on getting back to this baseline of cooperation proved arduous.

50 Million Facebook Accounts Compromised by Security Vulnerability
If you had to log back into your Facebook account and were wondering why, a massive security breach is to blame.
On Tuesday, Facebook "discovered a security issue affecting almost 50 million accounts," one that allowed attackers to "steal Facebook access tokens" and take over innocent people's accounts.
Facebook reset the access tokens on the 50 million affected accounts, as well as an additional 40 million user accounts as a "precautionary step." Affected users would need to log back into the app, desktop version, and linked apps as a result.
A notification at the top of your Facebook news feed will explain what happened, Facebook said.

Is the DC Universe Becoming Too Dark?
If there's been any takeaway from the from the last several weeks' worth of DC Comics releases, it's that it's not the greatest time to be a hero in the DC Universe. Nightwing was just grievously wounded in Batman #55. Doomsday Clock #7 revealed that Doctor Manhattan caused the premature death of a famed Golden Age superhero. And most disturbingly of all, no fewer than six heroes were killed in an act of superhuman mass-murder in Heroes in Crisis #1. At some point you have to question whether the DCU is becoming too dark for its own good.

Bruce Dern Replaces Burt Reynolds in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Bruce Dern is set to replace the late Burt Reynolds in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming film based on the Manson Family murders, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
As reported by Deadline, Dern will play the role of George Spahn, a rancher who owned Spahn Ranch in California and rented the venue out for filmmakers to shoot western movies. Spahn is now mostly known for allowing the Manson Family cult to reside at Spahn Ranch, and the murders of actress Sharon Tate and many others were allegedly planned at this location.
Dern became friends with Reynolds after co-starring in two films with him: the western TV movie Hard Ground, and the action TV movie Hard Time. Dern has also worked with Tarantino in his latest two films, playing General Sandy Smithers in The Hateful Eight, and Old Man Carrucan in Django Unchained.

Overlord Review: Producer JJ Abrams' Great New Horror Film
This is an advance review out of Fantastic Fest.
Remember when everyone was certain that Overlord was going to be set in the Cloverfield-universe (and started calling it Cloverlord)? Well, it's not but the film is finally here, and it is a lot of fun! Director Julius Avery has crafted an impressive film that is often more Saving Private Ryan than 28 Days Later.
Just like the first Predator, Overlord starts as a war drama, and then quickly switches gears and goes full monster film. We begin, much like Saving Private Ryan, with a scene of soldiers trying to invade France. It’s a nerve-wracking airdrop sequence that sets the tone for the rest of the film, where we get to know a group of American soldiers and listen to their banter, just before the plane gets shot down and we see the agonizing and harrowing reality of war. It’s a gorgeous and gritty scene, with rounds going off and planes exploding against the dark background of nighttime France, and Avery shoots the scene with the intensity of a veteran director (Overlord is only his second full-length feature).
