iOS 12 is now available for download, and it offers a lot of useful improvements to iPhones old and new. Here are some of the coolest new features you’ll see in today’s free update.
Faster Performance, Even on Older Devices
Unlike past iOS releases, which were only available for a few generations of phones, iOS 12 is available for devices going all the way back to the iPhone 5s and the iPad Mini 2. This is because its banner feature is performance, particularly when under heavy load. Apple is claiming that after you install iOS 12 you'll see: up to 40% faster app launch, 50% faster keyboard display, and 70% faster swipe to camera on the iPhone 6 Plus, among other improvements. We didn’t have an iPhone 5s to test at the time of publishing, but if Apple can deliver on this promise, it’s a big deal—and a big change from iOS releases in the past, which were notorious for crippling older phones.
