Warning: Full spoilers for Doom Patrol Season 1, Episode 6 below. If you need a refresher on where we left off, check out our review for Season 1, Episode 5.
Doom Patrol is a series with many fine qualities, not least of which being its wicked sense of humor. This week's episode is a test case, then, determining just how well the formula works when the humor takes a backseat to character drama and pathos. The show holds up pretty well under this newer, more serious-minded approach, but there's definitely a sense of something missing in this week's episode.
It's easy to forget that these characters don't actually think of themselves as "The Doom Patrol" yet. This week we learned that the actual Doom Patrol is a failed super-team from the 1950's, an done that Mr. Nobody has a vested interested in dredging back to the surface. The result is an episode that pays homage to the franchise's Silver Age roots, if not one that necessarily pushes the season's larger narrative forward.
