Doom Patrol Takes an Important Step Forward

Grant Morrison and Richard Case's Doom Patrol comics will probably always be considered the gold standard for the franchise, and for good reason. Mainstream comics don't come much more weird or more imaginative. And while the TV series has obviously been borrowing quite a few pages from the Morrison/Case playbook already, the fourth episode truly dives headlong into that zany run.

The series took a break on the Mr. Nobody front and the hunt for the missing Niles Caulder, instead shifting focus to the Cult of the Unwritten Book and the lost city of Nùrnheim. The result is a shift in a much more fantastical direction than previous episodes. And that's saying something given that the second episode involved a portal hiding inside a donkey and the third episode featured a Nazi super-scientist putting on a puppet show. This series is never afraid to flaunt its bizarre sense of humor and lean into its strangest impulses, and that's a huge part of what makes it stand out as much as it does.
