Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Final Review
For the first time in a few years, it seems like Call of Duty has stopped peeking at other shooters’ homework for inspiration. It’s not to say it hasn’t been successful with taking on trending modes and mechanics, like when Treyarch’s Black Ops 4 ditched the campaign and introduced an amazing battle royale mode. This year, though, Infinity Ward pulls from its own history for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. And as a result, it’s delivered excellent gunplay to pair with an intense and effective campaign and a fantastic weapon customization system in multiplayer. Something it didn’t learn, though, is that even a great arsenal can’t make up for poor map design, especially when there’s such a limited selection available at launch. Missteps in multiplayer and Spec Ops are like suppression fire that keep Modern Warfare from taking the high ground of its classic namesake, but everything else suggests that the series is now heading in a promising direction.

Netflix's The King Review
This is a non-spoiler review for David Michôd's The King, which starts streaming Friday, November 1 on Netflix. It's currently playing in limited theatrical release.
The King is a sometimes riveting, sometimes rickety retelling of Shakespeare's Henry V, starring Oscar-nominee Timothée Chalamet as a young reluctant king who's quickly steered into a war with France by a retinue of advisors with questionable loyalties.
Directed by David Michôd (Animal Kingdom, The Rover), and written by Michôd and Chalamet's co-star Joel Edgerton (Black Mass), The King attempts to take what's commonly known about the famous play -- that King Henry (given the common name "Hal" here) was pushed into a war by a self-serving council -- and tether it to larger, modernly relevant themes about power and inherited violence.

No Such Thing as Vampires
"No Such Thing as Vampires" is the pilot episode of the American paranormal romance television drama Moonlight. Premiering on CBS on September 28, 2007, it was written by series creators and executive producers Trevor Munson and Ron Koslow and directed by executive producer Rod Holcomb. The pilot introduces Mick St. John (Alex O'Loughlin, pictured), a private investigator and a vampire, along with his love interest Beth Turner (Sophia Myles), his mentor Josef Kostan (Jason Dohring), and his ex-wife Coraline Duvall (Shannyn Sossamon). Originally titled Twilight, the project was renamed and recast when picked up by CBS for the 2007–2008 American television season. Although received poorly by critics, the pilot managed to finish first for its night among total viewers and adults 18–49. Many critics faulted the acting and writing, but some thought that the series showed promise, and Dohring's performance was praised.

This Joker Comic Delivers Chilling Psychological Horror
Even when a comic is technically about the Joker, it's difficult to actually cast the Clown Prince of Crime as the main protagonist. Unlike the Joker movie, DC Comics has always shied away from stories that shed too much light on the character's origin or his manner of thinking. Better this villain's story be expressed in multiple choice. With that in mind, Joker: Hidden Smile is another strong addition to the library of Batman comics that are less about the Joker himself than his effect on those trapped in his orbit.
Killer Smile's premise may sound familiar at first glance. An ambitious psychiatrist thinks they have the key to cracking Joker's mind and curing his unique brand of madness, only to find their patient may be manipulating them instead. But this isn't really a retread of the classic Harley Quinn origin. Killer Smile is much more a psychological horror tale in the vein of Jacob's Ladder and Altered States. It's a comic where Dr. Ben Arnell finds the lines between reality and horrific fantasy blurring.

Batman Annual #4: One of 2019's Best DC Comics
"City of Bane" may not be working out as hoped, but that's not the only new Batman content from writer Tom King on tap this month. Batman Annual #4 comes along at the perfect time to give readers a break from the frustrating climax of King's main series. This issue is a perfect showcase of everything that makes the series shine. It's a poignant and beautifully illustrated reflection on why Batman does what he does.
While not directly tied to the events of King's run, Batman Annual #4 is significant in that it comes on the heels of a major twist in Batman #77. Alfred Pennyworth's narration fuels this story, as he narrates a series of strange adventures that make up Batman's day-to-day life. The goal is nothing more or less than to understand what motivates Bruce Wayne and whether he's a man without fear or a man who ignores fear.

Michael Collins (born October 31, 1930) is a former astronaut and test pilot who was the command module pilot of Apollo 11 in 1969. The first person to perform more than one spacewalk, he is one of 24 people to have flown to the Moon. Collins joined the U.S. Air Force after graduating from West Point in 1952. He made two spacewalks on his first mission on Gemini 10 in 1966. HBO Max Won't Prevent Password Sharing... For Now
As WarnerMedia reveals new details regarding the pricing/release date of HBO Max and the growing lineup of original content, the company is also revealing more about how it plans to tackle one of the more difficult problems facing streaming services - what to do about all the subscribers who share their passwords with friends and family?
The good news is that WarnerMedia seems to have no immediate plan of cracking down on password sharing, much less taking legal action against subscribers. The bad news is that the company is taking this practice into account and may start pricing the HBO Max service accordingly. Long story short - expect to start paying more if your password is being shared among several friends and family members.

It's honestly impressive how quickly The Flash has turned itself around in Season 6. It's not as if the series had anywhere to go but up after the past two seasons, but this sudden and dramatic return to form is pretty much the best case scenario. "There Will Be Blood" is a great reminder of how much character drama and family dynamics are the beating heart of the series, not superhero spectacle.

Moons of Madness Review
You can tell that a lot of great Lovecraftian games are crafted with love for the 20th century writer’s vision of horror, but Moons of Madness often feels more like an interactive movie than a video game. And I can’t help but wonder if it could have been more successful if it were. The story is decent though unfocused, but it suffers from the presence of gameplay that’s rarely more than busywork and often left me feeling as cold as the planet it’s set on.
Lovecraft and the cosmic-horror genre have found a comfortable home in video games. The early 20th century Massachusetts writer’s ideas have formed the basis of plenty of them in recent years, including Bloodborne and The Sinking City, but in Moons of Madness, developer Rock Pocket Games takes the ideas of the Ancient Ones in space to its logical endpoint by just putting you on Mars.

Sorga Ka Toedjoe
Sorga Ka Toedjoe is a film from the Dutch East Indies (present-day Indonesia) which had its premiere in Surabaya on 30 October 1940, one of fourteen domestic productions released that year. The black-and-white film featured traditional kroncong music and was targeted at native audiences. It was directed by Joshua and Othniel Wong for Tan's Film, a company owned by the ethnic Chinese brothers Khoen Yauw and Khoen Hian. The Wongs had worked for Tan's since 1938, when they directed the hit film Fatima featuring Rd Mochtar. Sorga Ka Toedjoe was the first production by Tan's Film after Mochtar left the company. Starring Roekiah and Djoemala as a younger couple and Kartolo and Annie Landouw as an older couple, it was a commercial and critical success. Roekiah and Djoemala took leading roles in three more films before Tan's closed in 1942, following the Japanese occupation of the country. Sorga Ka Toedjoe is now believed to be lost.

Deathstroke Fuels a Terrific Titans Episode
Warning: this review contains full spoilers for Titans: Season 2, Episode 8. If you need a refresher on where we left off, here's our review for Season 2, Episode 7.
It's been a rocky road for Titans in Season 2. As much as the general direction of the series feels like an improvement over the first season, the execution has generally come up short. Mostly, the show's pointlessly large cast of characters and complete lack of narrative focus have worked against what is generally a very faithful (albeit darker) take on the comics. But with "Jericho," Season 2 finally clicks and lives up to its full potential.

Operation Obviate
Operation Obviate was an unsuccessful British air raid of World War II that targeted the German battleship Tirpitz (pictured in 1943 or 1944). Conducted by Royal Air Force heavy bombers during the early hours of 29 October 1944, it sought to destroy the damaged battleship after she moved to a new anchorage near Tromsø in northern Norway. The attack followed the previous month's successful Operation Paravane, during which Tirpitz was crippled by British heavy bombers. In Operation Obviate, 38 bombers and a film aircraft departed from bases in northern Scotland. Obscured by clouds, the battleship was not directly hit, but was damaged by a bomb that exploded near her hull. A British bomber made a crash landing in Sweden after being hit by German anti-aircraft fire, and several others were damaged. The plans for the attack were reused for the next raid on the battleship, Operation Catechism, on 12 November, when Tirpitz was sunk with heavy loss of life.
Netflix Will Let You Watch Shows Extra Fast With Variable Playback Speed Test
Netflix is reportedly testing a variable playback speed feature on its mobile apps, which allows viewers to watch their favorite movies and TV shows at slower or faster rates.
Per Android Police, the playback option is only being tested on Google's mobile operating system (Android) and gives the subscriber the ability to slow down the program they're watching "to 0.5x or 0.75x, or raise it to 1.25x or 1.5x." Features like these have been around for years on podcasts and audiobooks but it's an uncommon practice in the world of live-action entertainment.
Director Judd Apatow, who co-created Netflix's Love, responded to the variable playback news via his Twitter account: "No @Netflix no. Don’t make me have to call every director and show creator on Earth to fight you on this. Save me the time. I will win but it will take a ton of time. Don’t f**k with our timing. We give you nice things. Leave them as they were intended to be seen."

Afterparty Review
I’ve never beaten him in a fiddle contest, but I’m sure glad I got to challenge Lucifer to a drinking competition in Night School Studio’s second adventure game, Afterparty. The Oxenfree developers’ descent into the underworld retains its formula of 2D exploration with near-constant conversation and Telltale-like dialogue choices while introducing a world of neon-soaked demonic alleyways and dive bars that look... well, like most do on Earth. But inside that over-the-top demonic shell is a deeply human, cuttingly honest, and frequently funny story about two best friends making it through one hell of a night.
Afterparty’s tightly knit cast allows for more personal and affecting storytelling than what we saw in Oxenfree. Milo and Lola have, surprisingly, found themselves in Hell. Believing they’ve wrongly ended up surrounded by fire and brimstone for eternity, the duo ventures off to win a trip back to Earth by beating Satan in a drinking game. Should be easy enough, right?

Batwoman Finally Shows Signs of Life
Warning: this review contains full spoilers for Batwoman: Season 1, Episode 4! If you need a refresher on where we left off, here's our review for Season 1, Episode 3.
Just when I was getting ready to write off Batwoman as a lost cause, the series shows new signs of life in Episode 4. If still not where it needs to be, the show makes significant strides in "Who Are You?" and is finally starting to feel like a legitimate piece of the Arrowverse puzzle, rather than a weird, redundant outlier.
Batwoman is still a ways from establishing a clear identity for itself. The series borrows heavily from both the Arrow: Season 1 and Dark Knight playbooks without bringing a great deal new to the table, beyond the flawed sisterly dynamic between Kate and Alice. But if the series is doomed to retread familiar ground, at least it's doing a better job of capturing that early Arrow sensibility. It may be as simple as the fact that we're now in Episode 4. Most new shows tend to flounder in those early few weeks, only really developing a consistent voice and tone around the Episode 4 or 5 mark. Watching "Who Are You?", there's a definite sense the writers are slowly coming to terms with this new setting and cast of characters and getting a better handle on how to balance the various moving parts.

Rodrigues solitaire
The Rodrigues solitaire (Pezophaps solitaria) was a flightless bird that was endemic to the Indian Ocean island of Rodrigues. With the extinct dodo of Mauritius, it formed a subfamily of the pigeons and doves. The male solitaire was much larger than the female and his plumage was a darker grey-brown. Both sexes had a black band at the base of the hooked beak and a long neck. They were territorial, using bony knobs on their wings in combat. The female laid a single egg that was incubated by both sexes. Their diet included fruits and seeds. The solitaire was first described in detail by François Leguat, the leader of French Huguenot refugees who were marooned on Rodrigues in 1691–1693, but little else was known about the bird until the first of thousands of subfossil bones were found in 1786. Hunted by humans and introduced animals, the solitaire was extinct by the late 18th century. A former constellation was named after it. (This article is part of a featured topic: Raphinae.)

Sandringham House
Sandringham House in Norfolk, England, is the private home of Elizabeth II. Although architecturally undistinguished (Pevsner Architectural Guides describing it as "frenetic Jacobean"), the house has been a favoured residence of the Royal family for over 150 years. The estate was bought in 1862 for Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. Between 1870 and 1900 the house was rebuilt and Edward developed the wider property into one of the best sporting estates in England. George V inherited it in 1910 and in 1932 made the first ever Christmas broadcast from the house. George died at Sandringham on 20 January 1936. The property passed to his son Edward VIII, and at the abdication, it was purchased by Edward's brother, George VI. As devoted to the house as his father, he died there on 6 February 1952. On the King's death, Sandringham was inherited by Elizabeth II. The Queen spends much of the winter at the house, including the anniversary of her father's death and of her own accession.

Fortnite Chapter 2 Leaker Sued by Epic Games
Epic Games is suing a UX tester for leaking details for Fortnite Chapter 2 ahead of its official release, according to new court documents.
As reported by Polygon, in a lawsuit filed to North Carolina courts Epic Games is accusing Ronald Sykes, or @inviiblellama9, or leaking information about Fortnite Chapter 2. In a court document, Epic says that the company is, “suing Sykes because he broke his contractual obligation to keep Epic’s secrets about the upcoming season of Fortnite, Epic’s popular video game.”
Epic claims that information “is currency,” and that Sykes “cashed in on what he learned as a User Experience tester for Epic.” The company is asking for injunctive relief and maximum damages for the leaks and breach of a non-disclosure agreement, along with legal fees.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare - Single-Player Campaign Review
After taking a year off in 2018, Call of Duty’s single-player campaign has come roaring back in the revival of the Modern Warfare name. For my money, this is the best campaign the series has seen since 2010’s Black Ops; and if that sounds like a backhanded compliment, I don’t mean it as one. Though it stops short of being as provocative and button-pushing as it seemed poised to be, it is nevertheless an extremely well-designed first-person shooter that refreshes the franchise format just enough with a few cool new ideas and some smart new takes on others we haven’t seen in years.
The plot of Modern Warfare’s rebooted storyline starts out trying to blur the lines between good and bad, but it ends up quickly establishing the good guys as very clearly good. The US team is led by memorably mustachioed fan-favorite Captain John Price, while the sister and brother duo of Farah and Hamir head up an insurgency movement fighting to push Russian forces out of their fictional home country of Urzikstan. That’s right: it’s cool to shoot at Russia again.

Ryan Reynolds Almost Played This Role in Zombieland 2
Ryan Reynolds was the first choice for the role of Albuquerque in Zombieland: Double Tap.
The writers of Zombieland (also the writers of Reynolds' Deadpool movies) spoke to Deadline about their long-awaited zombie sequel. They revealed that scheduling and Reynolds' desire to spend time with his family led to the role going to Luke Wilson.
“We made it a goal to do only Ryan Reynolds movies,” Paul Wernick joked. “But this one slipped through our fingers. Luke was amazing and it worked out terrific for us.”

Why Disney Can’t Buy Theater Chains
You might think that Disney can do just about anything, and you’d almost be right. They’re extremely powerful and they’re taking over rival studios and controlling multiple streaming services, but there are still limits to just how far they can expand. We know this because other studios tried it and they eventually got busted.
First, a primer: Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox earlier this year will have long-lasting ramifications on the film industry, some of which are probably easy to predict, some less so. While many audience members are celebrating the fact that the X-Men can now join forces with the Avengers (eventually), there are many practical concerns that have people throughout the industry deeply concerned.

Jaekelopterus
Jaekelopterus was a predatory aquatic arthropod of the order of eurypterids, often called sea scorpions. Its claws and compound eyes indicate it was active and powerful with high visual acuity, most likely an apex predator in the ecosystems of Euramerica. Fossils have been discovered from roughly 400 million years ago, during the Early Devonian. There are two known species: the type species J. rhenaniae from brackish to fresh water strata in the Rhineland, and J. howelli from estuarine strata in Wyoming. Based on isolated fossil remains from the Klerf Formation of Germany, J. rhenaniae has been estimated to have reached a size of around 2.3–2.6 metres (7.5–8.5 ft), making it the largest arthropod ever discovered. J. howelli was much smaller, reaching 80 centimetres (2.6 ft) in length. In overall appearance, Jaekelopterus was similar to other pterygotid eurypterids, with enlarged pincers and forelimbs. The genus was named for German paleontologist Otto Jaekel, who described the type species.
Avengers: Endgame Almost Had Hulk and Banner Talk to Each Other
The writers of Avengers: Endgame almost included a scene where Hulk and Bruce Banner talked to each other.
Co-writer Christopher Markus told Cinema Blend that the scene would've taken place after Hulk snaps his fingers wearing the Infinity Gauntlet and brings everybody back. In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos sees a young Gamora after he snaps his fingers. So, the writers imagined what Bruce Banner would've seen.
"We did actually write a version, and this existed before The Ancient One scene was slowly beaten out, but there was a version where it was Banner talking to The Hulk… and we never shot it, but it was kind of a cool thing to get them both on screen together interacting," Markus said.
