Batman #84 is the comic readers should have gotten months ago. While this issue serves as the penultimate chapter of writer Tom King's epic Batman saga, it devotes the vast majority of its energy to filling in the gaps of previous stories and answering the many lingering questions surrounding Flashpoint's Thomas Wayne. While those answers help illuminate an often perplexing character, this issue ultimately reads like a case of "too little, too late."
Only fairly recently has it become clear that Thomas Wayne is the true antagonist of King's run. Bane may have been manipulating Bruce Wayne from the very beginning, but ultimately, even he was just a pawn of Batman's father. The goal with issue #84 is nothing more or less than shedding more light on Thomas' motivations and actions. We get a better sense of why he's so hellbent on convincing Bruce to give up the Batman mantle, and finally learn how he survived his apparent death in The Flash #22 almost three years ago.
