From the beginning, there's been a very strange relationship between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Netflix's Marvel shows. Tonally and stylistically, these shows could hardly be more different from the movies to which they're supposedly connected. And now with Netflix seemingly ready to jettison these shows entirely, it's time we all admit what's been obvious for a while. These shows don't actually connect to the MCU.
As it is, there's always been a very one-sided relationship between Marvel Studios movies and the various MCU-connected shows. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. constantly reinvents itself to match the current state of the MCU, yet characters and events from that series are almost never referenced in the movies. Still, at least Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. occasionally draws in familiar MCU faces like Nick Fury and Lady Sif. The connection may be one-sided, but at least it exists.
