Dauntless Review
If you stripped Monster Hunter down to its core components and redesigned it as a free-to-play (but not pay-to-win), online-only game, you'd get something very close to Dauntless. It takes most of the best parts of Capcom's iconic franchise and redeploys them in a way that's accessible and fun with a whole lot less baggage. While it can lack the depth that arises from that complexity, Dauntless’s streamlined approach offers something else that more than makes up for it.
The hook is simple: you’re a slayer, and you slay big, nasty monsters called behemoths. That’s it – slaying is basically all you do. The lack of a real story beyond inconsequential blocks of text at the beginning and end of missions that foster little empathy was a bummer at first, but I quickly forgot about it. Then again, storytelling has never been the selling point in other games in this genre (such as Monster Hunter itself or God Eater) so it’s hard to say I miss it very much. Instead of being a source of lore-heavy dialogue, every NPC in Dauntless is either a vendor or questgiver in the hub town, so when you’re not customizing things in menus you’re out in the wild chopping off tails, dodging fireballs, and slaying enormous beasts. It’s very focused.

15 Disappointing Video Game Endings
Did Game of Thrones' ending drive you crazy? What about Lost's? The Sopranos'? Or, moving away from TV for a second, what about a video game where you've invested dozens upon dozens of hours of your time, become deeply invested in its lore and characters, only to discover its ending has the consistency of a wet fart?
Here, we've rounded up some of the IGN staff's most hated video game endings. Take note, not all of these are 100% serious, and feel free to tell us why we're wrong in the comment section below!

Cleopatra
Cleopatra (69–30 BC) was the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, though nominally survived as pharaoh by her son Caesarion. As a member of the Ptolemaic dynasty, she was a descendant of its founder Ptolemy I Soter, a Macedonian Greek general and companion of Alexander the Great. After the death of Cleopatra, Egypt became a province of the Roman Empire, marking the end of the Hellenistic period that had lasted since the reign of Alexander (336–323 BC). While her native language was Koine Greek, she was the first Ptolemaic ruler to learn the Egyptian language. Cleopatra's legacy survives in numerous works of art. She has been a pop culture icon of Egyptomania since the Victorian era, appearing in burlesque satire, Hollywood films such as Cleopatra (1963), and commercial brands.

Good Girl Gone Bad
Good Girl Gone Bad is the third studio album by Barbadian singer Rihanna, released on May 31, 2007, by Def Jam Recordings and SRP Records. Inspired by Brandy Norwood's album Afrodisiac (2004), Good Girl Gone Bad is a pop, dance-pop and R&B album with 1980s influences. It marks a departure from the Caribbean sound of Rihanna's previous releases. Critics gave it generally positive reviews, praising its composition and Rihanna's new musical direction, though some criticized the lyrics. The album received seven Grammy Award nominations at the 2008 ceremony; the single "Umbrella" won in the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration category, and later came in at number 412 on Rolling Stone's updated 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list. The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart, reached number one in Canada, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, and had sold over 9 million copies worldwide as of 2017. It spawned five singles, including "Umbrella" and "Don't Stop the Music".
E3: Here's What We Want From Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Outside of a rather unceremonious title reveal at last year’s EA press conference at E3, not much was known about Jedi: Fallen Order until this year’s Star Wars Celebration convention in Chicago, where developer Respawn Games blew the lid off the game with an hour-long live panel in front of a packed Star Wars loving crowd. At the panel, Respawn debuted a new cinematic trailer, discussed some big story, setting, and character details, and even unveiled the game’s new droid, an adorable little robot named BD-1 who looks like a sentient version of Luke Skywalker’s Macrobinoculars from A New Hope. We learned that the story features new Star Wars hero Cal Kestis, a Jedi padawan trying his best to lay low after the Empire’s Order 66 was enacted to (almost successfully) wipe out all Jedi from the galaxy.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to Feature Cross-Play
The recently announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is set to feature cross-play and won’t have a season pass.
In an official statement from Infinity Ward, the team plans for Modern Warfare to be played together across PC and console through cross-play support. It wasn’t clarified if this means PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players will be able to play together, or if it simply means PS4 and Xbox One players can join games with PC players separately.
Beyond this news, Infinity Ward revealed it’s eliminating a traditional season pass from Modern Warfare, so the team can “deliver more free maps and content as well as post-launch events to all players.” Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s season pass runs for $50 and includes 12 additional maps, exclusive characters, additional zombie modes and more.

Why Infinity Ward Decided to Reboot Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
IGN had the chance to speak with Infinity Ward narrative director Taylor Kurosaki about why the studio decided to reboot Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and what that means for its characters and story.
“When we set out to make this game, we asked ourselves ‘what does the word ‘modern’ followed by the word ‘warfare’ mean?’” Kurosaki told IGN. “Modern warfare, in 2019, means the theater of war is even less defined now than it was back when those first games were made. It’s more complex. It’s more grey. It less mimics what traditional warfare meant.”
Kurosaki continued, speaking on how warfare has changed since 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. “That was a game that was sort of built on the aftermath of things like 9/11 and Operation Desert Storm, where you saw big phalanxes of tanks rolling across the desert fighting against other enemies that were wearing uniforms and were flying flags – it was sort of traditional, in a more modern sense.

How Jon Favreau Directed The Lion King Inside a Video Game
Disney’s upcoming film The Lion King brings the classic animated feature into the realm of live-action. Not an easy task, what with all the singing and dancing animals. At the helm of this tricky endeavor is director Jon Favreau, who cut his teeth on the animated-to-real life game with 2016’s The Jungle Book. I visited the set of Lion King with a small group of press to witness Favreau’s filmmaking process and was intrigued to see the entire thing was essentially shot in an intricate virtual reality video game.
Explaining Favreau’s Vision
But before we get to the technical particulars, it’s relevant to hear why Favreau felt the need to take the lead on this movie in the first place. After all, many deem the original to be a masterpiece as-is, so why mess with perfection? Favreau pointed to the celebrated Lion King stage show as a worthy adaptation of the animated original -- and to his point, it has earned over $1 billion to become the highest grossing Broadway production of all time -- and his goal is to create a third take on the beloved tale that tells The Lion King’s timeless story with what he described as the spectacle of a BBC wildlife documentary.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Wants to Make You Uncomfortable
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is probably going to upset people, perhaps by design. The reboot, which brings familiar characters like Captain Price into modern-day, “ripped from the headlines” missions but is otherwise not connected to the previous entries in the brand’s best-known subfranchise, brings with it all of the expected technical upgrades: ray tracing, multi-layer shading, spectral rendering, 4K resolution, HDR, etc. But it’s the renewed focus on realism and the single-player campaign, which was so unimportant to Call of Duty in last year’s Black Ops 4 that it literally didn’t have one, that’s going to help Modern Warfare leave its mark.
As in previous Modern Warfares, the campaign is split between multiple perspectives. Here, it’s the Tier 1 Operators – the highly trained military experts with cutting-edge tech – and the rebel factions who fight terrorism with guerilla tactics and improvised weapons like Molotov cocktails and IEDs. I saw a slice from each side. Both were incredibly dark; literally in the case of the Tier 1 Operators, and figuratively for the rebels.

Why The Flash Had Another Rough Year
Note: This is a mostly spoiler-free review of the fifth season of The Flash, which is now available to stream on Netflix. I'll discuss basic character and plot details but save direct spoiler chatter for the end of the review.
For most of its life, The Flash has followed a fairly similar pattern to that of Arrow. The first two seasons set a high standard that the show has never really been able to match since. Like Arrow, Season 3 marked a significant drop-off in quality, while Season 4 really dove off a cliff. Were The Flash to continue following Arrow's example, Season 5 would see the series rebound and recapture some of its lost glory. Sadly, this is where The Flash finally changed gears and stopped following Arrow's example. Season 5 may not quite rank as the show's worst to date, but at some point that's an almost meaningless distinction.

Deadwood: The Movie Review
Roughly 13 years after HBO canceled the award-winning series, Deadwood finally gets the proper conclusion its creators, cast, and fans have long awaited in the form of a feature film, premiering on HBO on May 31. And while it wouldn’t be considered one of the best episodes of the series, this movie is nevertheless a fitting and moving farewell to Deadwood and its cast of verbose but rough-hewn, morally complex characters.
Set a decade after the events of the final episode, Deadwood: The Movie picks up in 1889 as South Dakota becomes the 40th state in the Union. A U.S. Senator has come to town to commemorate this momentous occasion … George Ambrose Hearst (played with sinister resolve by Gerald McRaney), the same rich and powerful villain who lorded over Deadwood in Season 3.

Ma Review: A Truly Bonkers B-Movie
The art of the B-movie has evolved much since the days of Ed Wood, just in that there can be a legitimate art to them now with the right filmmaker at the helm. Just look at such recent hits as It Follows or last summer’s Upgrade, two films with laughable premises that boast moody atmospheres and innovative filmmaking. Then comes along director Tate Taylor’s deliciously bonkers Ma, a B-movie that puts all that artsy stuff to the side and just lets itself sloppily run from the ridiculous to the insane and back to the ridiculous again with no real aesthetic signature.
That is to say that, in light of other B-movie successes over the past few years, Taylor could have set his sights higher in terms of Ma’s look and feel. But this economically told revenge thriller has one hell of a trump card in Octavia Spencer. Breaking the typecast Taylor helped cement with his 2011 Oscar contender The Help, for which Spencer won Best Supporting Actress, the pair have created one of the most gleefully entertaining horror villains in recent memory.

Batman's Final Adventure Is Fascinating and Weird
DC's Black Label imprint has had a more sluggish start than readers were probably hoping. Between the silly "Batpenis" controversy last fall and the lack of new books since, Black Label has yet to live up to its promise as a haven for mature, accessible superhero stories. Luckily, the imprint is getting a major boost with the arrival of its second Batman-focused comic. Batman: Last Knight on Earth is shaping up to be both a worthy addition to the line and a fitting conclusion to Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's long-running Batman saga.
Snyder has said this series was inspired by a conversation with fellow Batman veteran Grant Morrison, who told him that every great Batman story should feature both a birth and a death for the Dark Knight. Having already chronicled Batman's birth in Zero Year, Snyder and Capullo are now handling the death in Last Knight on Earth. This new miniseries has clear ties to their past work (referencing plot points from "Superheavy" and the current Justice league comic), but its post-apocalyptic future setting also ensure the series stands on its own two legs. Not only do readers not need to have read the New 52 comic to appreciate Last Knight on Earth, the bizarre setting ensures readers will be caught off guard regardless of their familiarity with previous stories.

Good Omens: How Amazon Brought About the Apocalypse (in a Good Way)
Warning! Some SPOILERS for what we saw being filmed while on set in South Africa. Good Omens is set to release on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, May 31.
Occasionally the apocalypse arrives at the wrong time.
It’s happened to Good Omens, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s cult comedic novel about the end of the world. At the turn of the millennium, director Terry Gilliam was poised to make a feature-length adaptation with an impressive Hollywood cast.
“Johnny Depp playing Crowley and Robin Williams was playing Hester, madam Tracy, and Aziraphale. Kirsten Dunst, I think playing Anathema,” co-author Neil Gaiman tells me. “He
just needed some money from America, a big studio to sign on. He went out, and it was just after 9/11. And no big studio was interested in a comedy about the end of the world. They just weren’t. They were like, ‘Please go away and stop bothering us’. And the thing fell apart.”

Cultist Simulator Dev Reveals New Game, Book of Hours

Cultist Simulator: Anthology Edition is a definitive version of the game with brand new additions, a celebration of the bizarre narrative card game’s 1st birthday, and seems also to mark the end of the game’s development. Thankfully, we know what’s coming next, thanks to a new trailer:
Book of Hours began life as a speculative tweet from Weather Factory co-founder Alexis Kennedy (you can read it below), but it’s become more than the mooted Cultist Simulator ‘expandalone’ in the months since that first mention.
“That original tweet really was the product of about ninety seconds thought,” explains Kennedy to IGN, “and we've grown the team so we can do something a bit fancier. So it's going to be a fully-fledged game. It's all the same setting

Blue Ember Condenser Microphone Review
If you buy something through this post, IGN may get a share of the sale. For more, read our Terms of Use.
In the world of streaming mics, there may be no more well-known company than Blue Microphones. If you’ve watched more than a handful of Twitch streams, you’ve likely seen their wildly popular and bullet-shaped Blue Yeti or the more recent Blue Yeti Nano. I'm reviewing the Blue Ember (See it at Amazon), which is a microphone also intended for streamers and gamers, but one that’s quite a departure in several ways. It's small, thin, and purpose-driven with only a single recording pattern, but, most importantly, it drops USB support in favor of a more sophisticated XLR connection. At $99, is it worth becoming your next mic?
